We walk with our heads down, yet with proud egos, confident, invincible. In our hands we hold everything: directions, goals, clothes, dates to remember, the right shoes, the best restaurant, the lowest price, rankings for anything. In our hands we also hold the illusion of shaping the world, but it is an illusion. Yes, you make decisions, but among how many possibilities? Accept, reject everything, never truly free decisions; we did not write the conditions ourselves.
Algorithms like strings in the hands of puppeteers: puppets in love, angry puppets, happy puppets, hungry puppets, puppets that, time after time, tell someone elseโs story in the best possible way.
Certain like sheep in a flock, we do not stray. One step in the wrong direction and the dog barks, driving us all back to the shepherd with full bellies and swollen udders. We let ourselves be milked by the same hands over and over again. We deceive ourselves into believing the hands change from time to time, but the shepherd only changes gloves, once silk, once plastic. Always fed to the shepherd.
And if one little sheep manages to escape, to free itself, together we cry wolf.
Artisan intelligence is made of experience, of repeated gestures, repetitive yes, but careful in the constant search for improvement, even when satisfaction could seem enough. Returning to look at things in order to know them, knowing people in order to remember them, tasting in order to discover, choosing in order to shape reality.
Empirical knowledge, the kind based on experience, direct knowledge, the perception of the senses, once stood in opposition to knowledge born from deduction, speculation, abstract intellect. To this equation we should now add the knowledge produced by technology.
This is not a rejection, not hatred, not even a declaration of estrangement. Take it as a provocation, a provocation that also serves us. We want to remain awake, alert, we want to continue feeling pleasure in massaging the brain with our hands, using our hands to know the world, and using the brain to guide them, beginning to consider cerebral work as manual work. Thought itself โ metaphysical, abstract, intangible โ once considered the exclusive domain of the thinker, has always belonged to the artisan as well, but that may not remain true forever.
The risk is not only that a robotic vacuum cleaner, in exchange for cleaning, wants the map of the house; that cameras may give us not only security but less privacy; that always knowing the right thing, the right place, the correct outfit, may turn us all into the same person. The risk is losing ourselves, surrendering, complying with AI, losing the ability to choose freely.
And choosing holds immense power.
