Truffle hunter at Caffè Sicilia

Truffle

The first encounter with a truffle in Sicily is owed to Franco and Paolo Scrofani.
It was July 1975 when the two brothers, just thirteen years old, in Contrada Bibbia, between Palazzolo Acreide and Canicattini, found a truffle for the first time.

But no one was able to confirm that it truly was a truffle; at the time, there was not enough expertise on the subject in Sicily.
And so the story ended there…

In 1992, the discovery happened again.
It was April 25th, in Contrada Porticaletto, and once again chance led Franco and Paolo to the find.
This time, no longer boys, they investigated the discovery and continued their research, and from that moment on it became clear to everyone that truffles do exist in Sicily.

What had seemed to many like a coincidence not worth much attention turned out to be a very important discovery for the Iblean territory and for all of Sicily.

Much still needs to be done to protect and promote this product, but fortunately we know that Franco Scrofani is there, and he cares deeply about the subject.
